“Death Don’t Have No Mercy” Bruce Katz Band 10/15/22 Byron’s Bar

The Bruce Katz Band played a song just for me last night at Byron’s Bar in Pomeroy, Iowa.

The thing is: they’d never played the song before and initially declined my request for it but Aaron Lieberman (guitar, vocals) said he knew the song (by Rev. Gary Davis), and when I told them why I’d like to hear it, which was a death in the family earlier that day, they pulled a rabbit out of their hat and produced this track, completely unrehearsed:

My Dad was always a little mystified by my passion for music, and he is no longer around for yet another explanation from me, but the reason for that passion is contained here. Music is medicine.

Byron’s Bar being, well, The Deadhead Capital Of Iowa, the Bruce Katz Band played this wonderful version of “Sugaree”, 1971, by Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter, released on Garcia’s solo album of 1972
