Thoughts about the former brick & mortar, 1987-2002 RIP

Rainy Day Music was founded at Spencer, Iowa in November of 1987 and offered prerecorded music and other music-related merchandise. Rainy Day moved to the Internet in March of 2001 and promptly disappeared for a while until we resurfaced on our own site in 2005.
We feature hear-before-you-buy records, and our listing process is relatively slow (it takes about forty-five minutes per record just to record the samples and another forty-five to edit and upload them) but we’re making it a priority to keep that progress steady.
There’s no aspiration here of being the biggest guy on the block-this site is really intended to have a collector-to-collector flavor. At the present, the goal is to offer 500 record albums, topping it off at that number and gradually bringing up the grading within the 500 (more vg+, less vg).
The shopping cart is secure, and we accept credit card payments as well as PayPal payments, but we store no credit card information here (that data is handled at Square and/or PayPal). If you’re local (Spencer, IA), there’s even an option for local transactions (without shipping charges).
Though this blog contains information about our sales on other platforms, including antiques and other non-music-related items, our online STORE is another story. Over the years we’ve managed to narrow that down to an approximation of just what we did in the brick-and-mortar.
The exception to that is whatever record albums we’ve added since there was a brick and mortar, and that category will probably continue to evolve. The other stuff – promo posters, flats, postcards, and all that are from our original stock and in general were used in Rainy Day Music.
To look around in the store, it can be found at this link: It’s possible to shop as a guest, but if you register, there are certain advantages to that like everywhere else. We don’t share customer information with anyone (except certain insurance claims to third parties, which are rare).
We have two Facebook pages. The music related one is at this link. That page is going to evolve to include some content that ISN’T featured in the store, namely content about local live music, but it also includes anything new that we list to the store, and occasionally maybe stuff that we’ve posted to the wrong page (grin).
Erinn Peet Lukes, guitar and vocals, Ian Haegele bass and harmonies, Dylan McCarthy, mandolin and vocals and Allen Cooke dobro (absent for this performance)
Thunder And Rain, hailing from Colorado, kicked off a mid-western tour at Byron’s Bar, Pomeroy, Iowa, on Saturday night September 7, 2019 with twenty-four songs, delighting a small attentive crowd with their lush harmonies and accomplished picking skills.
Erinn Peet Lukes says they do “Acoustic Americana”, but some are tempted to pigeonhole them as “bluegrass”. They did do a bluegrass tune or two just to prove they could, but Peet Lukes pointed out that they don’t have a banjo, having “learned” , and mentioned jovially that “sometimes you just have to grow up and be an adult”, quickly adding that she was joking.
The band has been recording for about five years and Peet Lukes’ writing skills are considerable. Their covers are respectful and well-chosen (even the somewhat unlikely Sweet Child O’ Mine, which vaulted them to some YouTube fame a couple of years ago). McCarthy’s mandolin expertise was called upon for extra duty due to the dobro player Cooke’s absence and he rose to the occasion. Haegele’s stand up bass held down the bottom and was notable when it was his turn to solo.
Byron’s Bar is the crown jewel of Iowa listening rooms and is a perfect spot for a quieter band like Thunder And Rain. Unfortunately, as many bands performing there mention, it is also the middle of nowhere, and if you’re driving from the Denver area, it’s a long haul over some pretty rural roads toward the end of the trip. The band was just a little late, and bless their commitment, headed straight from their vehicle to the stage and played without a sound check other than the opening “Angela”. The house PA balked a little, particularly the vocal microphone, forcing listeners to pay close attention to what turned out to be their beautiful harmonies. That didn’t particularly detract, though, and drew this listener in closer.
In my notes, I marked a few personal favorites: “Cut The Wire”, the lead track on their current CD, (Start Believing), “Travelin’ Soldier”, a Dixie Chicks cover written by Bruce Robinson, “Into The Mystic”, a Van Morrison cover, “Angel From Montgomery”, the John Prine tune, and “Small Town Hero”, another original. Every other song they did was of equal caliber, so it might be silly to pick favorites.
Especially considering their ten hour trip to get there, the band delivered.
